Special Envoy of the Chinese Government and Vice Minister of Commerce Gao Yan Attends the Commencement Ceremony of China-Maldives Friendship Bridge

  

On December 30, the Special Envoy of the Chinese government and Vice Minister of Commerce Gao Yan attended the commencement ceremony of China-Maldives Friendship Bridge and made a speech. The President of Maldives Abdulla Yameen, leading all the members of Cabinet of the Maldives government, attended the ceremony. Near one thousand people from China and Maldives attended the ceremony.

Gao pointed out China-Maldives Friendship Bridge was jointly decided and named by the leaders of the two countries. To implement the important consensus of the leaders of the two countries, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce handled the special case in a special way, and timely promoted the preparation process of the project, ensuing that the construction of the bridge was launched in 2015. China is willing to, together with Maldives, take the building of China-Maldives Friendship Bridge as an opportunity, constantly enrich the connotation of the joint construction of the “21st Marine Silk Road”, and further consolidate and develop the comprehensive and friendly cooperation partnership. The aim is to benefit the people of the two countries, and to promote the peace, stability and prosperity of the region.

In his address, Abdulla Yameen thanked the Chinese government and people for their selfless help and great effort in the construction of the bridge. He highly appraised the importance of China-Maldives Friendship Bridge to the Maldives government’s economic growth and solution of social problems. He said China-Maldives Friendship Bridge is the largest infrastructure project of Maldives up to now, and also a symbolic project of Maldives and China in the field of “21st Marine Silk Road”. The bridge will not only realize the impossible dreams of the Maldives people, but will also become an important ribban connecting Maldives and China.

On that day, Abdulla Yameen met with Gao Yan at the Office of the President. The two parties exchanged views on further developing China-Maldives bilateral economic and trade relation.

Gao said that, according to the instructions of the leaders of the two countries, China and Maldives established and twice successfully held the inter-governmental joint committee on economic and trade. The two countries also held the first China-Maldives FTA negotiation. Under the joint effort of the two countries, in the first 10 months of 2015, the bilateral trade volume was up 51% year on year. The volume of the newly signed contractual projects of Chinese enterprises in Maldives was up 10 times. China was still the largest source country of tourism to Maldives.

Abdulla Yameen said Maldives attached great importance to the relations with China, and is willing to participate in China’s proposal of the “21st Marine Silk Road”. Maldives thanked China for its long-term help, and helped that the two parties would sign the Free Trade Agreement as soon as possible, and China would expand investment in Maldives.
